Get2College Helps Students from Kindergarten to High School

Written by: Katie Mayo, Director of North Mississippi Get2College Center

Thanks to a new organization in North Mississippi, Overpark Elementary students are getting a head start on preparing for college! Get2College is an organization designed to help Mississippi students “get to college.” Katie Mayo, the Director of the North Mississippi Get2College Center, recently visited Overpark Elementary School to get kids thinking about their futures early.

As part of the informational and fun activities, Mrs. Mayo and the Get2College teachers taught the students a song and played games, both geared towards motivating our students to thinking about colleges and universities early.

Kindergarteners also received a book about going to college, which teachers will be reading and discussing in class.

According to Coach JJ Downs, “The teachers and students had a lot of fun learning the song and playing the games. We can’t wait to read the book to our students. Get2College did a wonderful job!”

“It was truly a delight to work with the kindergarten students at Overpark Elementary.  The energy was contagious as students matched college mascots to universities and learned the words and motions to the College Knowledge song.  Students sang about becoming a teacher, a nurse, or an astronaut.  Coach JJ Downs is doing a great job in his efforts to create a college culture with young students and help build their excitement for learning at such an early age.”

Get2College offers extensive help with college planning at the high school level also. Students can receive assistance filling out financial aid forms, building resumes, and applying to colleges. In addition, the organization helps students prepare for the ACT, mentors high school students (and continues that mentoring in college), provides university campus tours, and offers family guidance sessions for college preparation.

Mr. Jim Ferguson, Chief Academic Officer of High Schools for DCS, is happy to have Get2College as a resource in DeSoto County. “I am super excited to have the opportunity to work with Mrs. Mayo on ways to help our students ‘Get 2 College.’ I hope to help DeSoto County Schools build a strong relationship with Get2College to benefit all of our students.”
